'A Fish Full of Dollars' The Movie is coming...

Updated: 1 day ago

The quickening, catch your breath… another fast and furious start to the year.

A Fish Full of Dollars!
A Fish Full of Dollars!

Yes, the legend himself @BillHohepa is creating a full-length feature film — a legacy-driven fishing story set in the waters of New Zealand. It’s more than a movie; it’s a tribute to coastal life, Kiwi character, and the deeper meaning behind the catch.

The journey is only just beginning as Bill brings this story to life. Talk about go ahead, make my day - I'm very privileged and excited to be acting in this epic undertaking, it’s daunting, sure — but as another famous New Zealander once said, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

New Zealand has produced some incredible films over the years — from Goodbye Pork Pie to The Piano, Lord of the Rings and many more. How about giving Bill the encouragement and support he deserves in this latest venture? We’re all volunteers, funding it ourselves with that typical Kiwi can‑do attitude.

Here’s to an epic tail😉 Facebook

Hauraki Gulf Roundup – New Year, New Action

Yellowfin Tuna (YFT)

The magic +/-100m line off Great Barrier has been producing the goods, with solid fish caught between the Mokes and Barrier. When they’re smashing bait on the surface, the visuals are spectacular — explosive aerial feeds as they chase down anything that moves.

With several multi‑day weather windows recently (and more on the way), towing smaller marlin-style lures or a diving bibbed ‘Rapala’ is proving deadly. A striped marlin bycatch is very much on the cards, so be prepared. Do you feel lucky, well do ya? Fresh YFT is unforgettable — and a quick online refresher on handling them post‑capture makes a massive difference.

Inner Auckland Kingfish & Snapper

The buoys and poles around the inner city are still delivering maximum light‑tackle and SWF thrills. Plenty of undersized kings are lurking around structure, waiting to ambush stray baitfish. They’re tempted with SWF, soft baits, microjigs, or a classic kahawai-style spinner. Silver flash is a great go‑to.

“Elephants eat peanuts” — and micro‑baits have been the winning formula around Rangitoto and a few more underwater highways inshore. Not just for kingfish, but for putting fresh snapper on ice even in the bright midday sun. Match the hatch - try the diminutive but cool little 2.5" Z-man , slim swims (disco cisco) a TRD minnowz in blue pearl, or how about a delectable looking imitation like Shrimpz, twitch twitch oh-so enticing. Light is right as you know: 6lb braid and 10lb leader is a beautiful combination, particularly in that clear shallow water and just a 1/4oz jighead or if you are au fait with worm hook style rigging - great tasty treat presentation.

Chasing the Dragon – Workups on the Move

Workups have been fast-moving lately, especially when kingfish are pushing bait and gannets are trying to keep up. With dolphins elsewhere, baitfish have more freedom to scatter, making the action more erratic.

More stationary workups have been spotted south of Great Barrier and toward Horn Rock/Little Barrier — even picked up by planes. No wonder the gannets are feeding well. Whales have also been making surprise appearances, adding those unforgettable “wow” moments.

East of Kawau and north of Tiri, some “kahawai-only” workups have been firing. These are brilliant fun on light or ultra-light gear and perfect for younger or novice anglers. Kahawai are also superb eating when prepped properly. Don’t just think snapper when the birds are diving — adapt and enjoy the action.

Summer Conditions

Super-still days have been ideal for holidaymakers, though the recent small jellyfish along the Whangaparaoa Peninsula haven’t been welcomed by swimmers.

This week the tidal current drops right off, meaning less wind-against-tide chop — great for smaller boats. But smaller currents and warm water often mean shorter bite times and lethargic snapper. Aim for the mid‑tide bite.

A bit of TLC and it'll be good to go.

Beaches have been buzzing with BBQs, paddle boards, jet-skis, electric surfboards, drone longlines, surfcasters, kayaks, biscuits — you name it. What’s been etched into your summer memories so far?

Fishing Tip – Rod Guide Saver

A few minutes with a soft cloth and a bit of Autosol metal polish (or a light cut/polish car wax) will eliminate that sneaky “tea-stain” rust

on your rod guides. Rust never sleeps — and once it creeps under the resin, it weakens everything. A quick clean now saves disappointment, cost, and colourful language later.

Cheers!
