Whale Watching: A Bucket List Experience
While out wider, 50m depths or more keep an eye out for our massive and majestic friends, the Brydes whales. These graceful creatures share the waters with us and have been feeding out by southern Little Barrier regularly, attracting good snapper and some kingfish too. Encountering the whales is a pure bucket list treat. Imagine witnessing their majestic presence against the backdrop of the open sea, such a great place to head for a day’s productive fishing right now, perhaps avoid their visible green fish-breath though!
Snapper at the Gates
Male snapper are getting their early act together, anticipating the arrival of spring feeding and breeding, and likewise the workups will be amping up. The adrenaline inducing and energetic feeding frenzies should start moving closer to shore from out in the 50m depths (Colville, Craddock and Jellicoe channels) over the next few weeks. If you own a jetski or boat, or are considering getting one, now’s the time to prepare for some thrilling fishing adventures and full fish bins, fishing memories for a lifetime are on the cards. Slow and steady still wins the race without workups right now, even with them going on in the vicinity at times, the water temperature hasn’t risen significantly yet. Colville for example produced a mighty snapper of over 90cm just last week!

Spring Weather Swings
Spring weather can be highly variable, that’s the nature of it. Stay well informed right up to the last minute about weather patterns—both days to avoid and days to take advantage of. Wild swings are typical during this season, so keep your gear ready for any conditions. Metvuw, Windy, Metservice, Swellmap all good options to combine forecasts and get an accurate picture of what’s ahead conditions-wise out on the water. The tidal current increases over the next week or so, which means wind against mid-tide can get very choppy.

NZ Fishing News Quarterly Magazine, out now...
Quick Bites:
· Better Snapper Condition: Improved snapper condition is a great sign, less ‘milky flesh’ syndrome reported lately, good news
· Firth of Thames: Patience remains key when fishing in this area at the moment, it's still in winter mode
· Workups in the Gulf: Some exciting and productive workups are happening further north along the coast past Leigh and out to Little Barrier
· Inner Auckland Areas: Squid fishing (and gurnard) can be more productive than snapper right now
· Pilchard Schools: Keep an eye out for pilchard schools mid gulf, the food chain is rattling! Even with no birds or dolphins present – good snapper can be found close by hard on the sea floor, a micro jig or kabura fished the bottom 3 or 4 metres are ideal options, not too aggressive on the action, slow retrievals the key for the still-hibernating snapper and you'll come home with good fresh fish
· Gurnard Time: Anchor and strayline out over the sand not far off the shoreline with small titbits (bait and little lures) — snapper and john dory might pleasantly surprise you while catching your gurnard.
